Sardius EMLA Encoder Best Practices
Here are a few best practices to optimize the performance of your Sardius EMLA Encoder.
Uninterruptible Power Supply
After racking your server-grade encoder, or placing your small-form factor unit into its new home, connect the power terminals to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). This should safeguard your hardware in the event of a power flicker to keep it running and your stream active.
Should power in your facility go out entirely, you will have a chance to get to the encoder and shut it down properly in order to prevent damage to the unit.
Power Handling
Ensure your encoder is powered up at least 30 minutes before your first stream of the day. Any time your encoder is power cycled, it spends some time communicating with our automation system and preparing it for optimized performance. Once optimized, our automation clears your encoder for streaming use.
Airflow
The Small Form Factor units are ventilated using fans on the top and bottom of the encoder. Please do not cover, obscure, or block these vents. Doing so can cause the encoder to overheat while streaming, or while idle.
Cable Input Planning
Depending on your encoder, you may have one or multiple video inputs. The Sardius EMLA Encoder will require 1 active input per live stream. If you intend to stream the same content to multiple destinations, such as a web player, OTT, Facebook, and/or YouTube, it may be possible to do this using one input if they are all running at the same time.
If you intend to stream different content to different destinations, we recommend dedicating specific video inputs for that purpose. For example:
- Input 1 - Main Hall
- Input 2 - Youth Group
If you have questions about input planning, please contact your Sardius Account Manager.
Network Input Planning
Each EMLA Encoder is configured to use a specific network interface for live streaming. This interface must always be connected and have a clear, unobstructed path to the internet.
Other network interfaces can be enabled for management, SFTP, or other internal uses and services. If you wish to use these other interfaces, please contact Sardius Support to arrange a testing period to ensure that live streaming will remain unaffected.
