Set Up SRT for Makito Encoder to Makito Decoder

This article will guide you through the process of setting up an SRT Stream from an Makito X or Makito X4 Encoder to a Makito Decoder. For the basis of this guide, we are assuming that your encoder has already been set up and configured on your network.

Before you begin:

  • Determine if the Makito Enconder will be the caller or the listener
    • If Caller
      • Obtain the URL and/or IP Address for Listener
      • Locate the Destination Port for the SRT Route
    • If Listener
      • Locate the Destination Port for the Caller to access
  • If Encrypting the stream
    • Determine an AES level
    • Create a passphrase

Set Up Order

  1. Create Port Forwarding Rules (if applicable)

  2. Set Up Your Encoder

    1. Create the Output on your Makito

    2. Activate the Output

  3. Set up your Decoder

    1. Create the Stream

    2. Activate the Stream

  4. Verify the signal is received and is strong

Create Port Forwarding Rules

If you are streaming from one campus/venue to another, you will need to make some adjustments at your firewall in order for your onsite SRT listener to be able to connect to the offsite SRT caller.

Contact your Network Administrator and request that they establish a port-forwarding rule at the firewall. Inform them that all TCP and UDP traffic arriving to that port will need to be forwarded from the firewall/campus’ public IP address to the SRT listener’s private network IP address.

Also request from your network administrator your campus’ exact public IP address. Notate this for your offsite SRT caller setup.

Example:

  • SRT Encoder (located at Campus A) will be the listener at IP address 192.168.10.101 and will be listening at port 2500.

  • Campus A’s network administrator establishes a forwarding rule, and directs all TCP/UDP traffic from port 2500 at the public IP, which is 8.8.8.8 to the SRT encoder

Helpful Tip:  Some campuses can establish a VPN connection between themselves. If this is true for your organization, then you can use the listener’s private network IP and port instead of the public IP address.

Set Up Your Encoder

To set up your encoder properly, we will need to configure:
  1. 1 Video Encoder
  2. At least 1 Audio Encoder
  3. 1 Output

Video Encoder

A minimum of 1 Video Encoder will need to be free so that it can be used by the output we will need to create. Select one from the list by clicking on the blur-colored name. A green light indicates that the encoder is already in use.

encoderSrt1

For this walkthrough, we will use HD Video Encoder 0. Click on this to open the encoder settings.

1. Select the appropriate input.

2. Enter the Basic Parameters

  • Bitrate (Kbps): enter a number from 6000 to 12000. (8000 - 10000 is recommended)
  • Resolution: leave as Automatic
  • Frame Rate: leave as Automatic
  • Framing: leave as IP
  • GOP Size: This is your segment duration. Calculate based on a 4-second duration. For example, 30 fps at 4 seconds should be 120.
    • 25fps / 4 seconds: 100
    • 30fps / 4 seconds: 120
    • 60fps / 4 seconds: 240

3. Scroll to the top of the page and click "Apply." Then click "Start" to start the video encoder.

Audio Encoder

Next, we need to configure an Audio Encoder. Click on the blue-colored name of an encoder in order to configure it. A green light indicates that the encoder is in use.

encoderSrt3

For this walkthrough, we will select Audio Encoder 0.

1. Select the appropriate input. Often, this will be SDI channels 1 and 2.

2. Adjust the Basic Parameters:

  • Channel Mode: Stereo
  • Bitrate: Select 192.
  • Sample Rate: leave as 48
  • AAC-LC Algorithm: leave as MPEG-2 ADTS
  • Language: leave blank

Once you have finished, scroll to the top of the page and click "Apply." Then click "Start."

Helpful Tip: If you wish to send multiple channels of audio, repeat the process for Audio Encoder 1, Audio Encoder 2, etc. until you have all of your channels attached to encoders.

Output

Return to the Outputs Screen and select the "Add" button.

1. Enter a name for the Output

2. Select your source Video and Audio Encoder(s). These will be the same as the ones you set up earlier. If you need to add additional Audio Encoders, click the "Add" button.

3. Set the Streaming Parameters
  • Broadcasting Protocol: Change to TS over SRT
  • If Caller
    • Connection
      • Mode: Caller
      • Address: enter in the address or IP of the SRT listener (example 192.168.10.100)
      • Source Port: leave blank
      • Destination Port: enter the Port number for the address above (example 2500)
  • If Listener
    • Connection
      • Mode: Listener
      • Port: enter the Port number you wish the Caller to use
  • SRT Settings
    • Latency (in milliseconds): change to at least 500
    • Encryption: select if you want your stream to be encrypted
      • Options: None, AES-128, AES-256
      • Passphrase: enter the same passphrase that will be entered into the decoder

encoderSrt7

No further adjustments are needed. Click "Create" at the top of the screen. The output will start automatically.

You can return to the Outputs screen. If you see a green dot next to your Output, the output has successfully connected to our Connection Address URL and is transmitting.

Set Up Your Decoder

Review this article to configure your Makito Decoder.

Activate the Output

If your output did not start immediately, make sure to click on the “None” under the Action Menu, then select “Start”

Once you’ve made your selection, click the Apply button.

This will start the SRT stream and encoding process.
