Elemental Setup Checklist

Congratulations on selecting an Elemental Live encoder for your facility. This checklist will guide you through the complete process of getting your Elemental set up.

Start with this list and follow these items in order to properly Setup your Encoder. If you like, you can print this page or download this handy PDF

Racking the Encoder

  • Attach the server-side rails to the left and right sides of the Elemental
  • Attach the rack-side rails to an available rack space
  • Slide the Elemental into its rack space
  • Attach the orange faceplate to the front of the unit

Connect a Monitor and Devices

  • Use the VGA port on the back of the encoder to plug in a monitor to view the command line interface (CLI).
  • Attach a keyboard and mouse to the USB ports on the back of the unit

Connect the Cables

  • Network
    • Connect an ethernet cable to the network port on the back of the Elemental labeled eth0
    • OPTIONAL: Connect an additional ethernet cable to the eth1 port on the back of the Elemental for redundancy
    • OPTIONAL: If you use more than one network port on the Elemental, consider connecting these ports to different routers, networks, or internet service providers

  • Video
    • Connect a 3G-SDI cable to one of the provided SDI to Micro SDI conversion cables. Then attach the Micro SDI end to SDI Input 1.
    • Continue connecting 3G-SDI cables to the provided converters as desired for additional inputs
    • Store any unused converters in a secure location, or attach them to the remaining inputs on the back of the Elemental

  • Power
    • Plug your power cable(s) into the back of the encoder and then into your primary power source. We recommend that you plug this into an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) that is powered by your facility’s primary power.
    • OPTIONAL: If you have a secondary power supply, such as a separate circuit or backup generator, plug one of the power cords into this system.

Network Planning

If your facility’s internal network is carefully structured, or has multiple LAN or WLAN levels, we strongly recommend completing this Network Planning portion.

  • Coordinate with your IT Department or Network Engineer to obtain the following:
  • Static IP for eth0
  • Static IP for the remaining ethernet ports you plan to use
  • Subnet, Gateway, and DNS settings

Perform the initial configuration

  • Press the power button on the front of the Elemental to turn the encoder on.
  • Using the keyboard and monitor, follow the steps shown on the screen to configure the Elemental
  • Before you can run the configuration script, you will be asked to accept the terms of the license agreement. In order to continue, you must type in yes and press Enter.
  • Enter the server's hostname. This will be the server's mDNS/Network identifier
  • You will be asked to input information for each of the server's network devices, beginning with eth0
    • Select DHCP or Static IP
    • If Static IP is selected, enter in the Static IP address and other information when asked.
NOTE: eth0 is required to be set up and active in order to access the Elemental's Web UI.
    • You will be asked for each eth port available on the Elemental.
      • You can choose to skip per device by typing in N when asked.
  • You will be asked to enable a firewall. Enter no.
  • You will be asked to enable OCR Captions. Enter no.
  • Select a Time Zone
    • If your zone does not appear in the initial list, enter n to see more results.
    • When you see your zone, enter in the corresponding number.
  • If you intend to pair the Elemental with the Sardius Control Panel for our system to remotely access and operate the encoder, you must enable Authentication for the Elemental.
    • Create an admin or other name for administrator user
    • Enter an email address for that user.
    • Enter a password for that user that contains at least 1 letter, 1 number, and 1 symbol
    • Re-enter that same password to confirm.
    • Enter an API key
If you leave this blank, the system will generate one for you.

NOTE: If you would like to set up additional user accounts, we recommend doing so using the Elemental's Web UI which will be available when you complete this checklist.
  • The Elemental will run the rest of the configuration script. This will take a few minutes.
  • When complete, you will be prompted to start the Elemental software. Type yes and press enter.
  • Wait 30-60 seconds, then run this command:
sudo reboot
When the Elemental has finished rebooting, run these two commands:
cd /opt/elemental_se

And then

sudo ./configure --https --skip-all
  • You will have to re-accept the license terms, and then the configuration script will run again. You will not need to reenter any information.

  • When complete, you will be prompted to start the Elemental. Type yes and press enter.
  • Disconnect the monitor and keyboard

Establish Access to the Elemental

  • Use a computer on the same network as the Elemental
  • Open a browser and enter the IP assigned to eth0
    • If you created a username and password during the initial configuration, enter that information to log in
  • If you are unable to access the Elemental, contact your IT Administrator or Network Specialist for assistance
