# Clipping an Asset

The Sardius Clipping Tool lets you create a trimmed, shareable version of any video asset — or combine multiple video segments into one polished export. You can clip from VOD recordings and live stream archives.

**Video**

> **Transcript:** In this video, we'll show you how to use our clipping tool to create a trimmed version of an asset, or combine multiple assets together. The clipping tool is available for any asset whose media files are stored inside the Sardius ecosystem. To access the tool, locate the asset you wish to clip from. On the overview pane, click the scissors icon under the lower right corner of the player. The clipping tool will open full screen. Let's take a tour of the interface, which includes the header, player properties, and timeline. The header includes breadcrumb navigation to take you back to different portions of the control panel, the tooltip guide, and the export function. Clicking cancel here will exit the clipping tool. Note if you cancel, you will lose all changes and you will have to start over the next time you access the clipping tool. The player has been simplified here to play/pause, quick navigation to the start and end of the clip, speed controls, volume and a loop function. If loop is enabled, we will loop the full clip until you press play/pause. Below the player we have the timeline. If your asset has thumbnails available, you will see the thumbnails on the timeline. Otherwise you will see a blue bar. Below it, you will have an audio waveform. To either side of the asset, You have the options to add or remove additional assets. We'll explain this more later in the video. We also have a playhead marker which will show you where you are when watching your asset. You are free to move this playhead around. As you do, you will see the timecode change to match your playback position and the player will follow as well. Beside the current timecode is the duration of the clip. To the right of the timeline, we have zoom controls to allow you to zoom in and out of the timeline, and then fit to zoom all the way back out above the timeline. In the middle are the controls to trim in, trim out, and split the clip at playhead. There are also buttons to undo and redo actions. Double clicking on an asset in the timeline will open the Precision Editor, allowing you to refine your in and out points down to the frame. Beside the player, we have the properties panel. When no asset is selected on the timeline, this area will be blank. Once a clip is selected, we'll show some information about it, specify where in the original asset the clip starts and ends, and provide the option to delete. If the clip has a transcript available, it will show in the transcript tab. You can search this transcript and click to move a playhead to that point. Now that we know our way around, let's trim an asset. I want to remove a portion from the start, a portion from the end, and cut out a statement in the middle. There are multiple ways I can set my start in endpoints. First, I can click on the left side of my asset on the timeline and drag the mouse inwards to change my start point. Once I let go, the asset will be cropped on the timeline and the start time of the asset updated accordingly. I can also move the playhead and use the trim in button to set my start point. Adjusting my out point works the same way. I can click and drag from the end, and I can move the playhead and select trim out. If I need to refine my edit, I can either adjust the trim in and out points in the property sidebar, or I can double click on the clip in the timeline to open the Precision Editor. Here I can see portions that I am not including in the clip. I can drag the handles to refine, and I can adjust the in and out times manually using the keyboard. Now I need to remove a statement from the video. I'll locate the statement I need to remove using the transcript pane. I'll use the playhead to find the exact start point. Then I'll use the split clip button to break this into two pieces. On the second clip, I'll use both the transcript tool and the split tool to separate the pieces. Then I'll click on the statement that I need to delete, and I'll press Delete Clip to remove it completely. I want to add bumpers to the beginning and end of my clip. At the front, I'll click on the plus button. The asset selector will open. I will enter the name of my asset and I can also refine the results using our filters should I choose. Once I've selected my bumper for the beginning, it will appear on the timeline. I can also refine the start and end times for this asset like I did the original clip. I can repeat this process for the bumper at the end of the video. I can also add assets in between clips using the same add function, but I won't do that for this project. One more thing. Now that we have multiple clips on the timeline, we have a new feature available to us. Currently, the timeline looks like this. But if I click arrange then I see a simplified view. Here I can easily rearrange the clips if I so desire. Clicking on timeline will return you to the timeline view. My clip is now ready for export. Let's click export in the upper right hand corner of the screen. In the modal, enter in a name for the asset and choose a publishing profile. We recommend the enhanced profiles for best results. Include metadata will already be selected. This means that your clip will inherit most of the metadata from the original asset. This includes the title, description, dates, Bios, categories, and more. Unchecking this field means that the original metadata will not be carried over into the new asset. Clicking edit metadata will allow you to customize the metadata from the parent asset that will be saved to your clip asset. Once you are ready, click Create Clip. Your work will enter a queue and that queue will be minimized so that you can continue with other work in the clipping tool. The queue will continue to operate in the background until all clips of finished exporting. Even if you close the clipping tool completely. Clicking on the queue will show you the current progress for all clips. And when my clip is finished processing, I'll get the option to open that clipped asset. The clip is treated as a brand new asset in our system, with a fresh set of thumbnails and its own metadata. It is also completely independent and detached from the original asset, so you are free to use or republish the clip however you desire. Congratulations! You are now able to clip an asset and assemble a brand new asset using one or more sources. Thank you for watching and we'll see you in the next video.

- The "in sequence" selector" shows all clip segments as scrollable tabs. The currently selected clip is highlighted yellow, and a counter (e.g., "clip 6 of 8") tells you which segment you're editing

- Using the Filmstrip yellow handles you can drag to set in/out (red boundaries mark the segment edges)

- IN and OUT - Exact start and end points— click a unit to highlight it yellow and set the step rate, then type to set or use ← / → arrows to change frame by frame.

- Duration is auto-calculated from IN/OUT — this is read-only and cannot be customized or edited.

- Cancel discards or applies the edit back to the clip

### **How to Split an Asset or Remove a Section**

1. Move the red playhead to the start of the section you want to remove.
2. Press **C** (or click the **Split at Playhead** button) to cut the clip at that point.
3. To remove: move the playhead to the end of the section to remove.
4. Press **C** again to create a second cut, isolating that segment.
5. Click on the segment you want to remove, then press **Delete** on your keyboard or click the Delete button in the Clipping Properties Panel

The remaining segments will export as one continuous clip.

### **Using Cue Points**

If your asset has Cue Points (chapter markers), they appear as **yellow pin markers** along the bottom of the timeline, each labeled with the cue point name and its time range.

![](https://support.sardius.media/kb-media/3738bb993e565798.png)

Clicking any cue point marker opens a quick-action menu:

---

#### _Option_

\| **✂️ Start clip at cue point** | Sets your Trim In to the start of that cue point |
\| **✂️ Use only this cue point** | Sets both Trim In and Trim Out to match exactly that cue point segment — instantly creates a clip of just that chapter |
\| **+ Add to timeline** | Adds that cue point's segment as a separate clip to the end of the timeline |

---

This gives you a fast way to build clips around your existing chapter structure without manually setting Trim In and Trim Out points from scratch.

> **Note:** **Note on export:** Only cue points that fall within your trim range (between Trim In and Trim Out) will be carried over to the exported clip. Their timestamps are automatically adjusted to match the new clip's boundaries. Cue points outside the trim range will not be included.

### **How to Add Bumpers or Additional Clips**

You can add intro and outro segments (bumpers) — or any additional clips — at any point in the timeline with no limit on how many you add.

![](https://support.sardius.media/kb-media/64ecacee99a2a002.png)

1. Click the **+** button (blue circle) that appears between segments or at either end of the timeline.
2. The asset selector will open. Search for the asset you want to add.
3. Once selected, the clip appears on the timeline at that position.
4. Repeat as needed.

To reorder segments, click **Arrange** to switch to the card view and drag the clips into your preferred order. Click **Timeline** to return when done.

The final export stitches everything together in the order shown on the timeline.

### **How to Export Your Clip**

#### When your clip is ready:

1. Click **Export** in the upper-right corner.
2. In the export modal:
   - Enter a **Title** for the new asset. This field is **required** — you cannot export without it.
   - Choose a **media profile**. We recommend Enhanced profiles for best results.
   - **Include Metadata** is selected by default but optional — this carries over the title, description, dates, categories, and other metadata from the **original asset**. Uncheck this to start with a blank slate.
   - Click **Edit Metadata** to customize which metadata fields are inherited. Until you've set values in Edit Metadata, you'll see _"No metadata set yet"_ in the preview — this is normal.
3. Click **Create Clip**.

Once submitted, a **queue tray** will appear on screen showing the progress of your export.
You can minimize this tray and drag it anywhere on the screen while you continue working. The queue will keep running even if you close the Clipping Tool entirely.

![](https://support.sardius.media/kb-media/6b8be7d3a78cb75c.png)
You can also click **Clipping Status** in the header at any time to open the full status modal, which shows all clips with their current progress. When a clip finishes, you'll see **Open** and **Remove** buttons next to it. A **Clear** button at the top removes all completed entries from the list.

**The clipped asset is treated as a brand new, independent asset in the system with its own metadata and thumbnails — it is not linked to the original.**

### **About Media Profiles**

We provide multiple media profiles to allow you to export your clip in a manner of your choosing.

- HLS for Online Viewing
- MP4 for Downloads or Advanced SimLive workflows
- MP3 for Downloads or Podcasts
- And any combination of the above

We provide standard and enhanced profiles to suit your preferences. While both produce excellent quality, we recommend the enhanced profiles for best accuracy and results.

> **Warning:** If your clip has one or more segments or assets involved, standard profiles will not be available.
