# 2-9. Add Registration/Authentication to a Channel

**Video**

> **Transcript:** Welcome to today's video. We'll be demonstrating how to add registration or authentication to a channel layout. We provide a variety of methods for registering and authenticating users. In this video, we will cover creating viewer segments, adding a viewer segment to an existing viewer, creating a registration or login page for your channel, and adding a channel layout customizing what these registered viewers will see. Let's begin with creating a viewer segment. Viewer segments are essentially a group of users who will have permission to see a customized experience on a channel. The channel that we're going to set up is going to feature a webinar, and we want to collect the viewer information so that we can contact them later. Let's create a viewer segment for this. In the Sardius control panel, let's click the cog next to your account name and select viewer settings. In the box below viewer segments we’ll enter “Webinar” and then click add. That's it. Our viewer segment is now ready to use. Before we can move on to our channel, you will want to make sure that you have at least one user with this viewer segment already attached. This is so that we could have an account ready to test our login function with. I'm going to select my user account. Scroll down to event access and add my new “Webinar” viewer segment here. I'll scroll down a little more and click update viewer. Awesome. My viewer account is now ready to be used for testing the channel as we build it. Now it's time to move on to building our channel. So let's start by creating the channel. Now select the “Login” layout. A quick note here. If you have other channels created, I'm sure you've noticed that you only have one experience available on those. This is what we call the default experience. This default exists as it will be the first thing every user will see when they come to your channel. If you don't have a gateway enabled, your viewers will come straight into your content. But with this experience, we don't want our viewers to come straight to our content. Instead, we want to make sure that all users are registered so we can capture their email address. So we'll build out this default registration experience and then build out our webinar experience. Now it's time to configure our Login layout. Under features, we have several options. We have our own registration system, but we do offer integrations with Brushfire, Eventbrite, Ticketspice and a few others. Details on these integrations can be found with your Sardius Account manager. We do offer several free log in options. For example, we could use a simple password that we shared with a private audience so that they could log in. But we can't collect email addresses this way. We do have an email only option, which is handy if this channel is for a specific group of people like a virtual board meeting. You enter your board members as viewers, tag them with a particular viewer experience and then they'll be able to log in. But what we really want for this channel is the Default option. Although every person who comes to this channel will have to register before they enter, we want to show login as the default option. I want this option because I don't want those who have come here, register, and then return to log in only to think that, “Does my registration not work? Do I need to register again?” We want to keep this as simple for them as possible. You can customize the login messages and button titles. We can give the viewer the option to add their name or even add some custom registration fields. Let's add a field to ask the viewer for their job title. This information will be handy for us to see the variety of careers that are present for our webinar. Now we get to add our viewer segment. I want everyone who registers to be added to our “Webinar” viewer segment. So I’ll select that here. We can also ask the viewer to opt in for email communications and even to provide a code. For instance, if you give your Facebook audience a code, you can track the number of registrations from your Facebook group as opposed to the other places you've advertised in. Before we click out of this panel, let's update our channel to save our changes. Great. Now let's take a look at our background and color section to customize how our registration looks. Now we're ready to add what logged in viewers get to see. Let's scroll to the top and click Home. Now we'll click Add Viewer Segment. We’ll select our Webinar group and then add. Let's open our experience and go to the settings tab where we'll select the “Slate” layout. Let's go to the footer and make sure our logout option is enabled. Great! Let's update these changes and give this a test. In the upper right corner of your screen, select Open Channel. we've never logged in before, we will need to log in to see the experience. We can also take a moment and register a new user to see if the system correctly assigns the new user the right viewer segment. Let's go ahead and register. I'll enter in my email address. Hit all the important fields and then click submit. Now I'll return to log in. Logging in... And here we go! I can see our webinar channel. I still have some work to do to build out the experience, and that's okay. At least I know that the registration and the authentication portions are operational and working. Congratulations. You can now create authentication and registration for a new channel. It is possible to add registration and authentication to an existing channel. Be aware that if you change the layout for an existing experience, all customization for that layout will be lost. Please consult your account manager or Sardius Support for assistance on implementing this feature on an existing channel. And that's it for this video. We'll see you next time for another tutorial.

In this video, you will learn about the different ways you can add registration and/or authentication to a Sardius Channel. You will also learn about how to create and assign Viewer Segments to a Viewer in order to grant them access to your streaming content.
