# 12. Upload and Manage Assets

**Video**

> **Transcript:** Welcome back to our onboarding video series. In this video, we are going to walk you through how to upload and manage your assets. What is an asset? In our system, an asset can be a video, an audio file, a graphic, even a PDF. All of these elements can be combined together into a single asset. For example, you can have a recording of an interview. You can have an HLS file for playback on websites, an MP3 for audio podcasts, a thumbnail, even a closed caption VTT file combined into a single asset, Assets can be created in our system in different ways. When a channel is created, a channel stream asset is created as well. Archiving a live event. Uploading files up to 50GB in size through the web browser. Uploading files to a watch folder via Cyberduck. Importing or linking an offsite file or HLS stream. In this video, we'll cover uploading files through the web browser directly into the control panel. Let's start by accessing the asset section by clicking assets on the sidebar. In this section, you can search for assets, filter by asset type, view assets tagged in certain categories or feeds, see the publishing status and a few other options. For a complete dive into this section, we encourage you to take a look at our knowledge base. Let's upload our asset. Click Add Asset in the upper right corner. Here you can upload the asset import from a cloud storage location or directly link to a streaming feed, such as an Akamai HLS feed. We are going to use the upload function. I'll click here to select my file and upload it. We're just going to call this “Sample Asset” Once the file is uploaded, you'll select your upload and then click create. Let's manage this asset so that we can use it according to our workflows. Once I select the asset, I can see its publishing status, as well as what and how much content is associated with this asset. Because this is a brand new asset, there isn't really anything to look at just yet. I have quick access to a player link, the clipping tool, and the publishing options. We want to use this asset in the VOD workflow in an audio podcast feed, so I'll begin by publishing as an MP3. Once that's done, I'll publish this again as HLS. So I'll click Publish, select my profile and click Publish. You'll see my state has updated the processing. I have an additional file now in my content numbers here. I can already see that I would like a different thumbnail. I can use or create thumbnail tool to open a modal, select a different part of the video and click create. All right, perfect. If you want to upload a custom thumbnail, we can click on the images tab and use this section to upload a new JPEG or PNG image. Once it's uploaded, we can click the buttons beside the file and choose Set Default Thumbnail. While we're here, let's take a look at the files tab. Here you can upload additional files like a PDF of interview notes, or even a file that can enable closed captions in the player for this asset. Under the media tab, we can see our default file, which is now an HLS playlist our mp3 for our podcast and the original file we uploaded. Now let's take a look at the metadata tab. The Sardius Control Panel contains a robust and powerful metadata engine. The more metadata you can assign to your assets, the more our system can help you leverage your assets. Here we can change our title, add a description, and change the PID if we want to use it in certain advanced feeds or workflows. We can manage the different dates. Air dates normally reflect the original airing or creation date of the asset. For example, if you upload a recording from 2007, you can set that here. The available date is normally used to establish when the asset can be available to the public. The expiration date, by contrast, sets the date when this asset can no longer be publicly available and played. We can also categorize this asset using categories, series, tags, topics, and albums. These items can dynamically interact with feeds you create to filter and place content in Sardius channels and related workflows. You can also associate certain people with your assets using Bios. For example, if the person in this asset is a regular speaker, you can attach that speaker to this video and their bio can be pulled through to a channel like one using the collection layout. Finally, let's talk about approvals and restrictions. If this asset is to be used in the feed, we need to make sure that the asset is approved. If an asset is not approved, it will not show when a feed. For restrictions assets default to not restricted. When toggled. The setting will hide this asset in a public feed, but it will still be visible only in private feeds. Public and private settings can be separately configured in each feed. Once you have made your adjustments in each section, click the update button in the lower right of the screen to save your changes. Congratulations! You can now upload and manage your assets in your library. We'll see you in the next video.

In this episode of our Onboarding Tutorials, you will learn how to upload and manage your assets. This will include media profiles, adding metadata, and uploading additional files to your asset.
